Goals in Google Analytics help you track specific actions on your website, such as completing a purchase, signing up for a newsletter, or visiting a particular page.
Step-by-Step Guide to Setting Up Goals
Step 1: Log into your Google Analytics account.
- Select the desired property and view where you want to set up the goal.
Step 2: Navigate to Goals
- Go to the Admin panel (gear icon at the bottom left).
- Under the View column, select Goals.
Step 3: Create a New Goal
- Click on the + New Goal button.
- Choose a Template (e.g., revenue, acquisition, inquiry) or select Custom if none of the templates match your needs.
Step 4: Define the Goal
- Name your goal (e.g., "Newsletter Sign-Up").
- Select a Goal Type:
- Destination: Tracks when a user lands on a specific page (e.g., a thank-you page).
- Duration: Tracks the time a user spends on your site.
- Pages/Screens per session: Tracks the number of pages/screens a user views.
- Event: Tracks specific interactions (e.g., video plays, downloads).
- Set up the required parameters based on the selected goal type.
Step 5: Verify and Save
- Use the Verify this Goal option to test the setup.
- Click Save to activate the goal.

Events are user interactions that can be tracked independently from page views, such as clicks on buttons, video plays, and downloads.

Step 1: Implement Event Tracking Code
- Add the event tracking code to your website or app.
Step 2: Test Event Tracking
- Use the Real-Time reports in Google Analytics to test and verify if the events are being tracked correctly.
Step 3: Set Up Event Goals (Optional)
- If you want to set up a goal based on an event, follow the goal setup steps mentioned above, but select Event as the goal type.
Step 4: Monitoring Goals and Events
- Once your goals and events are set up, you can monitor their performance through various GA reports:
- Goals Report: Found under Conversions > Goals.
- Events Report: Found under Behavior > Events.
