How to Create Product Bundles on Shopify

A Shopify product page on desktop and mobile with a Frequently Bought Together product bundle highlighted below the Add to cart button

Most shoppers come to a Shopify store for one product. They add it to the cart and check out, even when a matching product would go well with it.

Product bundles show those matching products together on the product page, often with a bundle discount. Shoppers can add the whole set to their cart in one click instead of finding each product on its own.

Here are the three ways to create product bundles on a Shopify store: with a Product Bundles app, from your theme settings, or with custom code.

What Are Product Bundles?

Product bundles are groups of products sold together, usually at a lower price than buying each product separately. On a Shopify store, a product bundle often shows on the product page as a "Frequently Bought Together" block with the products, a total price and one button that adds the whole bundle to the cart.

Good product bundles include:

  • A total price and the saving: Shoppers see what the bundle costs and how much they save before they click.
  • A variant picker for each product: Shoppers can choose a size or color for every product in the bundle.
  • A choice of products: Shoppers can swap a product in the bundle for another product you allow.
  • One button for the whole bundle: Every product goes into the cart in one click.

Each product in a bundle goes into the cart as its own line item, so Shopify keeps the stock count of every product accurate.

What's the Quickest Way to Create Product Bundles?

  • Vitals - All in One App is the quickest way to create product bundles for most stores
  • Vitals also offers 40+ apps, such as product reviews, volume discounts and a sticky add to cart button, in one subscription of $29.99/month, so you don't have to install and pay for each app separately

Here's how the three methods compare. If you'd rather weigh several bundle apps against each other, see our list of the best bundle apps for Shopify.

Step 5: Pick the Bundle Layout

Choose how the bundle looks on the product page, then click Choose:

  • Checklist: Product images in a row, with a checklist of the products under the button
  • Full size: Large product images side by side, each with its own variant picker
  • Compact: One row per product, with the total and the button at the bottom

The bundle editor then opens with the settings on the left and a live preview on the right. You can change the layout later under Placements → Product page → Layout.

Step 6: Name the Bundle and Choose Where It Starts

Give the bundle an Internal name. Only you see the internal name.

Under Applies to, choose the products whose pages show the bundle:

  • All products: The bundle can show on every product page
  • Specific products or collections: The bundle shows only on the products or collections you pick

Use Exclude specific products or collections to keep the bundle off certain products.

Step 7: Choose the Bundled Products

The Bundled products card holds the products that join the Applies to product. Each group adds one product to the bundle, and Group #1 sets the first one:

  • Smart match: Uses Shopify's Related Products API to suggest a product related to the one the shopper is viewing
  • Same collection as the product the customer is viewing: Adds a product from the same collection
  • Specific products or collections: Adds the products or collections you pick

Tick Let customers pick their own product to show a Pick another link, so shoppers can swap the product for another one from the same group. Tick Show this bundle on these products' own product pages to show the bundle on the bundled product's page too. Click Add another group to add more products, up to five products in one bundle.

Step 8: Set the Bundle Discount

In the Discount card, the Discount name is the label shoppers see in the cart and at checkout, such as "Bundle and save!". Then pick a Discount type:

  • No discount: Shows the products as a set at their normal prices
  • Percentage off: Takes a percentage off the bundle, such as 10%
  • Amount off: Takes a set amount off the bundle, such as $10
  • Fixed price: Sets one price for the whole bundle

Show savings against decides the struck-through price. With Compare-at price, the bundle shows each product's compare-at price struck through, so the "Save" amount includes your existing sale. The discount itself always comes off the current price.

Step 9: Check Which Discounts Can Combine

Discount combinations sets which other discounts your Vitals offers can combine with at checkout: Product discounts (on cart items), Order discounts (on the cart subtotal) and Shipping discounts. The setting applies to all your Vitals offers.

Keep all three ticked unless you have a reason to stop a discount type. Turning a type off means the bundle discount can stop applying when the cart already has a discount of that type.

Step 10: Schedule the Bundle (Optional)

Under Schedule, Publish offer has two options. Immediately starts the bundle once you publish it. Schedule starts the bundle on the date and time you set.

Tick Set end date to end the bundle on a set date, such as the last day of a sale. Leave Set end date unticked to keep the bundle live until you turn it off.

An end date also lets you add a countdown timer.

Step 11: Hide the Bundle From Some Customers (Optional)

Under Visibility, Exclude from this offer has two options:

  • Shopify B2B customers: Hides the bundle from customers buying for a company through Shopify B2B
  • Customers with specific tags: Click Add tags and pick the customer tags that shouldn't see the bundle

Excluded customers don't get the bundle discount at checkout either. A customer is recognized only once logged in, so guest shoppers always see the bundle.

Step 12: Write the Header and Button Text

In the Placements card, the Product page placement is on by default. The Header is the title above the bundle, "Frequently Bought Together" by default. The Button text is the label on the bundle button, "Add bundle to cart" by default.

Color theme at the top of the card sets the bundle colors, with nine presets to choose from.

If you set an end date in Step 10, tick Add countdown timer to show a countdown above the bundle. Customize appearance opens more settings for the product page bundle, such as its Position on the page.

Step 13: Show the Bundle in More Places (Optional)

Turn on more placements in the same Placements card:

  • Cart page: Suggests the missing product when the cart holds only part of the bundle
  • Pop-up on Add to Cart: Shows the bundle in a pop-up when a shopper adds the product to the cart
  • Pop-up on Checkout: Offers the missing product when the shopper clicks the Checkout button
  • Thank you page: Offers the rest of the bundle after an order that held only part of the bundle

The Pop-up on Add to Cart and Thank you page placements work on bundles with one bundled group. The Cart page placement works on bundles with up to two bundled groups.

Step 14: Choose Where Add to Cart Sends Shoppers

Add to cart redirect sets where shoppers go after clicking the bundle button. Use global setting follows your store default. You can also choose Auto detect your theme settings (supported themes), Cart page, Checkout page or Stay on the same page.

Step 15: Publish, Test on Your Phone and Watch the Results

Click Publish to put the bundle live, or Save as draft to keep it hidden while you work on it. Nothing goes live until you publish.

Open a product page on your phone and on desktop. Check that the bundle shows the right products, that the variant pickers change the price, and that the bundle button adds every product to the cart with the discount. Once the bundle is live, Analytics in the More actions menu shows how the bundle performs.

How to Create Product Bundles From Your Theme Settings?

Most Shopify themes don't include product bundles with a bundle discount. Some themes include a Complementary products block that lists products to buy together, set up in Shopify's Search & Discovery app. To check your theme's settings:

  1. In the Shopify admin, go to Online Store → Themes and click Customize
  2. Use the page menu at the top to open a product page
  3. Click the Product information section and look for a Complementary products block or a bundle setting

A theme's Complementary products block shows related products, but usually with no bundle discount, no total price and no single button that adds the whole set to the cart. If your theme's block has everything you need, you may not need an app at all.

How to Create Product Bundles Without an App?

Hire a developer to build product bundles into your theme with Liquid, CSS and JavaScript, plus a Shopify discount for the bundle price.

Custom product bundles usually involve:

  1. Duplicating your theme, so the live store keeps working while the code is tested
  2. Adding the bundle's markup to the product page template
  3. Writing a script that adds every product in the bundle to the cart in one click and keeps each variant picker in sync
  4. Setting up a Shopify automatic discount or a discount function so the bundle price applies at checkout
  5. Testing every product and variant, then publishing the theme copy

Custom code means no extra app, but you or your developer have to maintain it. A theme update can replace the files that hold the code, so the bundle may need rebuilding after each update. Swapping products, cart page offers and bundle analytics all have to be built by hand too.

How to Increase AOV With Product Bundles?

Product bundles increase average order value (AOV) by adding a second product to orders that would otherwise hold one product. A bundles app gets more of those extra products into the cart with these settings:

  • Bundle your best sellers. Set Applies to to the products shoppers already buy most, so the bundle shows on the pages with the most orders
  • Pair products that are used together. A tee with chinos or a phone case with a screen protector feels like one purchase to shoppers. Use Specific products or collections when you know the right pairing
  • Add more products to the bundle. Click Add another group to grow the bundle up to five products, so each bundle adds more to the order
  • Show the saving. Shoppers add the whole set when the saving is clear. Set a Discount type and use Show savings against to show the struck-through price
  • Offer the bundle again after Add to Cart. For a two-product bundle, turn on Pop-up on Add to Cart, so shoppers who scrolled past the bundle still see the offer
  • Complete the set in the cart. Turn on Cart page to suggest the missing product when the cart holds only part of the bundle
  • Offer the rest of the bundle at checkout. Turn on Pop-up on Checkout to offer the missing product when the shopper clicks the Checkout button

Why Aren't My Product Bundles Showing or Working?

Most product bundle problems have one of these causes:

  • The bundle doesn't show at all: Check that the bundle is published, not saved as a draft. A bundle also hides when one of its products is deleted or isn't published to your Online Store sales channel
  • The bundle doesn't show on a bundled product's own page: Open the bundle, expand that group in Bundled products and tick Show this bundle on these products' own product pages. New bundles and new groups start with this box unticked
  • A bundled product doesn't appear: Products in the groups show only while they're in stock, so a bundle never suggests a product shoppers can't buy
  • The pop-up or Thank you page placement can't be turned on: Pop-up on Add to Cart and Thank you page work on bundles with one bundled group only. Remove groups to use these placements
  • The bundle discount doesn't apply at checkout: The discount applies only when the whole bundle is added through the bundle button. Check Discount combinations too, since a turned-off discount type can stop the bundle discount when the cart already has a discount of that type
  • You can't create more bundles: Vitals allows up to 100 active discounts across your offers. Turn off or delete bundles you no longer use

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the best way to create product bundles on Shopify?

Vitals - All in One App is the best way for most stores. It creates product bundles without code, with a bundle discount, a variant picker for each product, product swapping and placements on the product page, cart page and pop-ups.

2. Does Shopify have built-in product bundles?

No, Shopify themes don't create product bundles with a bundle discount by default. Some themes can show complementary products, but you'll need a bundle app or custom code to sell the products as a bundle at a bundle price.

3. How many products can a product bundle hold?

A Vitals product bundle holds between two and five products. That's the product the shopper is viewing plus up to four more, one from each bundled group.

4. Can customers mix and match products in a bundle?

Yes. Put a collection or several products in a group and tick Let customers pick their own product. Shoppers then use Pick another to choose which product fills that group, and pick the variant they want.

5. Do product bundles keep my inventory accurate?

Yes. Each product in a Vitals bundle goes into the cart as its own Shopify line item, so Shopify deducts stock from each product as usual. There are no bundle SKUs to set up.

6. Can I sell two of the same product in a bundle?

Yes. The number of groups sets the quantity. For one phone case and two screen protectors, set the phone case under Applies to, then add the screen protector to Group #1 and again to Group #2.

7. Can I offer a product bundle for a limited time?

Yes. In the Schedule card, choose Schedule to set a start date, then tick Set end date to end the bundle on a set day. With an end date set, you can tick Add countdown timer to show a countdown above the bundle.
